From Ketchikan to Your Home: One-of-a-Kind Souvenirs Await!

After an unforgettable adventure exploring Alaska, take a piece of it home with you! Our gift shop has the perfect souvenirs and keepsakes to remember your Alaskan adventure. At our gift store you’ll find a fantastic selection of handcrafted items made by talented local artists in Ketchikan. From beautifully painted artwork to intricately designed jewelry — these are pieces you won’t find anywhere else as they reflect the very essence of Alaskan culture.

Utilizing the natural gifts the rainforest provides us

At our gift shop, we proudly showcase the unique artistry of local artisans and the vibrant heritage of our community. Inspired by the lush rainforest surrounding us, many of our creations incorporate natural materials like the Devil’s Club plant, whose leaves are used to craft healing salves known for their medicinal properties. These plant-based products reflect the environment around us, blending nature’s gifts with the creativity and craftsmanship of the community. A highlight of our collection is the extraordinary handcrafted artwork by Tsimshian Master Carver Kevin Clevenger, whose intricate carvings celebrate the rich traditions of the Tsimshian people.

Cedar trees are a cornerstone of the culture and craftsmanship of the Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest, including the Tsimshian. Revered for their strength, durability, and natural beauty, these ancient trees have been used for centuries to carve totem poles, which are powerful symbols of family, community, and heritage. The wood from the cedar tree is prized for its ability to withstand the test of time, making it the perfect material for creating totem poles that can stand for generations. Carved with intricate designs, each totem pole tells a unique story, representing the values, traditions, and ancestry of the people it honors. The process of carving a totem pole is an art form passed down through generations, requiring great skill, patience, and deep respect for the tree and its significance.

Kevin Clevenger, our Tsimshian Master Carver, learned the sacred art of carving from his late uncle, Wayne, who was a revered carver in his own right. Under his uncle’s guidance, Kevin honed his skills and developed a deep understanding of the traditions and stories behind each carving. Wayne instilled in him not only the technical craft of carving but also the importance of respecting the cedar wood and the cultural significance it holds. Through this mentorship, Kevin became a master of his craft, carrying forward his uncle’s legacy and continuing to create totem poles and other works that honor the Tsimshian people’s rich history. Today, each piece Kevin carves carries the teachings and spirit of his uncle, making his work a living tribute to their shared heritage. You can see Kevin or his apprentice, Wesley carving in real time on our Rainforest Wildlife Sanctuary & Totem Park Walking Tour. Kevin’s work, which spans a range of products throughout our store, is a true reflection of Alaskan artistry, culture, and family bond and each piece is thoughtfully crafted right here in Ketchikan.

Handcrafted Ulus from Local Blacksmiths

At Kawanti Adventures we’re thrilled to offer a special collection of handcrafted ulus, made by our talented local blacksmiths right here at our Rainforest Sanctuary. Known for their sharpness and precision, these ulus are crafted using traditional methods, blending functionality with beautiful artistry. If you’re looking for a unique addition to your kitchen or a memorable souvenir, these ulus make the perfect gift or keepsake. Each piece showcases the skill and craftsmanship of our local artisans, offering a true taste of Alaskan culture to take home with you.

We’re excited to introduce a new addition to our store—Kawanti Coffee, conveniently located just inside the gift store! After your tour, take a moment to relax and enjoy a freshly brewed cup of coffee, a creamy latte, or a soothing tea. We also offer local brews and wines, so you can savor the unique flavors of our region while you unwind. Adventure Beyond the Job

At Kawanti Adventures, adventure isn’t just what we offer to our customers—it’s also the driving force behind our workplace culture. From the thrill of outdoor exploration to the teamwork that powers our operations, working at Kawanti is more than just a job; it’s an experience that combines passion, purpose, and a sense of adventure.

Every day at Kawanti Adventures is a little different, and that’s what keeps it exciting. Whether you’re part of our customer service team, a guide leading groups of guests on tours, or working in our operations team behind the scenes, there’s a job for you!

According to our 4th-season returning Zipline Guide Javier, no two days are alike when it comes to tourism in Alaska. “Something unique about working in Alaska is that no day is the same, yet everyday can feel rewarding. It’s impossible to feel bored with your job when your office is one of the most beautiful places in the world,” Javier said.

What’s the Best Part of the Job?

While adventure is at the heart of what we do, it’s the people and the moments that make working here truly memorable. When we asked some of our staff members about their favorite part of the job, their responses reflected the passion and camaraderie that define Kawanti Adventures.

Willow, Dock Representative and Adventure Kart Guide:

“The community of Kawanti, everyone was so friendly and welcoming. Everyone was eager to make friends and include you in whatever plans were going on. Everyone is so passionate about their jobs as well, you could really tell that they love what they do.”

Javier, Senior Zipline Guide:

“The scenery! Whether it was walking on the boardwalk, watching bears, or ziplining in the canopy, the views at work were some of the best on the island.”

Shannon, Walking Guide:

“My favorite part about working for Kawanti was the office views! Getting to wake up and walk through the forest every day never got old!”

Company-Provided Housing

At Kawanti Adventures, we know that living in close proximity to nature and the action is a huge perk of the job. For many of our team members, the adventure doesn’t stop when the workday ends. That’s why we offer employee housing on and near our sites, ensuring that our staff have a comfortable and convenient place to live during the tour season.

Javier shared his experience living in the company-provided housing at Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary during his past 4 seasons working at Kawanti. “Being housed right outside of Herring Cove was always the biggest perk. I’ve seen humpback whales, eagles, orcas, and bears all from my front door.” He went on to mention the communal living space as well and some of the team bonding that occured with coworkers. “The communal living adds a great dynamic. Bonfires, art nights, and game nights were a regular occurrence. I’ve made some lifelong friendships at the company bunkhouses.” said Javier.

Work-Life Balance

At Kawanti, while our focus is on tourism and the excitement of welcoming new visitors daily, we recognize that balance is essential for long-term sustainability—both for our employees and our guests. That’s why we prioritize well-being, flexibility, and time off to explore.

Our positions align with the Alaska tourism season, running from April through October. While we prioritize applicants with broader availability during these months, we are flexible and are experienced in accommodating student schedules, seasonal commitments, and other availability needs!

With flexibility, amazing perks, and plenty of opportunities to explore around Ketchikan, it’s easy to see why our employees love what they do—and why they continue to come back for more. With Alaska’s extended daylight hours during the summer, there’s plenty of time to enjoy adventures and take in the beauty of Ketchikan even after your workday ends.

One of our Kart Guides, Willow, shared some of her after-work experiences with us. “We’d often go out in groups to walk around town, see a movie, go for a hike, get lunch or dinner, and we’d always have a great time!”

In Ketchikan, visitors have access to a diverse range of shore excursions. As a member of the Kawanti team, you’ll enjoy heavily discounted rates (sometimes free!) on numerous other local tours, giving you the perfect opportunity to explore our region of Alaska and enjoy your free time! From a group guided kayaking tour, to a seaplane tour of the Misty Fjords, to a wildlife viewing boat cruise, the excursion opportunities are endless!

Building Skills and Gaining Experience

Working in Alaska’s tourism industry offers Kawanti staff a unique opportunity to develop a wide range of skills and experience that is highly transferable. Staff gain hands-on knowledge in hospitality, outdoor leadership, and customer service, while also honing critical soft skills such as communication, adaptability, and problem-solving in a fast-paced environment.

Shannon, one of our 2024 Trail Guides, spoke about the new skills she has gained while working at Kawanti. “One of the skills I took away from this summer is adaptability. Every single day I was interacting with varying sized groups of guests from all over the world. Every person was different and I wanted to shape my tour around what my guests wanted to hear more about, which kept my tour constantly changing and evolving.”

Zipline Guide Javier discussed how his role has made him an overall better educator. “Working at Kawanti, I’ve become a better educator and communicator. I am passionate about wildlife education and Kawanti has taught me how to balance teaching with entertainment. This has allowed me to help people foster a deeper connection and appreciation for the nature around us.”

No experience? No Problem!

Kawanti offers a training program that is designed to equip employees with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the dynamic world of Alaska tourism. From hands-on experience to classroom learning, our comprehensive training covers everything from safety protocols and customer service to local history and wildlife education. Employees are supported throughout the process, with ongoing mentorship and development to ensure they are prepared for every adventure, both for our guests and for themselves.

Ketchikan local and Kawanti employee, Shelby, highlighted how the training process was a huge part of the job for her. “The training is the most important part of the job. They can take someone who has no experience, scared of heights, and lacking communication skills and in a couple weeks, they’ll be comfortable at 150ft in the air doing tours with big groups of guests. We also get trained in rescues and safety precautions in case something were to ever go wrong. There are multiple rescue procedures for many different potential scenarios that could occur.”

Why Choose Kawanti?

Kawanti Adventures offers an opportunity to immerse yourself in the beauty and excitement of Alaska while developing valuable skills that will last a lifetime. Whether you’re looking for a job that offers adventure, a chance to work in the breathtaking beauty of Alaska, or the opportunity to learn and grow in a dynamic environment, Kawanti provides all that and more. With stunning surroundings, diverse experiences, and a culture that prioritizes adventure and teamwork. Come join us, and make this summer one to remember!

MISTY FJORDS NATIONAL MONUMENT

The Misty Fjords National Monument is a breathtaking wilderness area located in the Tongass National Rainforest in Southeast Alaska. It is known for its dramatic scenery of towering cliffs, deep fjords, and cascading waterfalls. The Tongass National Forest is the largest, intact coastal rainforest in America. Misty Fjords is a piece of this treasure and is set aside for all visitors – now and in the future. Visitors can travel either by boat or floatplane in Behm Canal, the major waterway through the heart of the area, and sightings of killer whales, porpoises, mountain goats, and bears could be possible.

HISTORY (cited from fs.usda.gov)

In 1978, President Jimmy Carter proclaimed over 2,200,000 acres as the Misty Fjords National Monument according to fs.usda.gov. In 1980, this acreage got reduced to 2,142,243 acres but was now congressionally designated as Misty Fjords National Monument Wilderness and still remains the largest wilderness area on the Tongass National Forest. Due to this designation, it is now strategically managed to continue the preservation of this undeveloped, enduring ecosystem for the enjoyment of present and future generations.

17,000 years ago Misty Fjords National Monument would have been covered with only one thing, massive bodies of ice. As the ice disbanded, it carved away gloriously long, deep fiords with cliffs that rise for thousands of feet. They are considered the skyscrapers of this wilderness wonderland.

FLIGHTSEEING TOURS

At Kawanti Adventures and Taquan Air, we offer scenic flightseeing tours of the beautiful, Misty Fjords National Monument! On this tour, our experienced pilots will guide you through the Misty Fjords, offering unparalleled views of Alaska’s stunning landscape. From the comfort of our floatplanes, you’ll witness the rugged beauty of the region, including lush forests, rugged coastlines, and wildlife like bears, eagles, and whales. This is a nearly two hour long tour exploring the beauty of Southeast, Alaska from above with the pristine wilderness and ocean below you!

MISTY FJORDS FUN FACTS:

  • The fjords were carved by glaciers over thousands of years, creating dramatic cliffs, waterfalls, and crystal-clear lakes.
  • Misty Fjords is home to diverse wildlife, including black bears, mountain goats, bald eagles, and seals.
  • The area is famous for its misty, atmospheric conditions, which create a sense of mystery and beauty.
  • Misty Fjords is a popular destination for adventure seekers, offering opportunities for kayaking and flightseeing tours.
  • The reflections of the fjords in the calm waters below create a mirror-like effect.

Our Adventure Kart Expedition team, known for our thrilling off-road tours through the Tongass National Forest and Alaskan wilderness, decided to give back to the community that has supported us over the years. We recently donated two of our old Tom cars to the auto shop class at Ketchikan High School. With this donation we are providing hands-on learning opportunities for high school students interested in automotive technology.

Ketchikan High School’s auto shop teacher, Clint McClennan expressed gratitude for the donation, stating that the Tom cars will allow students to practice their skills in a real-world setting. This generous gesture from Kawanti Adventures and our Adventure Kart Expedition tour not only benefits the school but also inspires the next generation of mechanics and engineers.

When visiting Ketchikan High School, we brought in one of our new Polaris RZR 1000’s to showcase to the auto shop class, as well as compare to our old Tom cars. Brian Carstens, our Adventure Karts Manager, gave an informative talk to the students about the features of the Polaris RZR 1000, drawing attention to its powerful 1000cc engine, capable of delivering thrilling speeds and exceptional performance on any terrain. Brian went on to talk about the fully adjustable suspension system and premium FOX shocks, he also highlighted how the RZR 1000 offers a smooth and controlled ride, even over the most challenging obstacles. Another emphasis he made about the new RZR’s was the advanced technology. Brian explained how the Ride Command system with GPS navigation and Bluetooth connectivity enhances the overall driving experience, ensuring both convenience and safety for every adventure.

Our donation of the Tom cars to the local high school marks a meaningful contribution to the community. These high-performance vehicles will not only enhance the students’ hands-on learning experiences but also inspire a sense of excitement and adventure. By supporting education and fostering a drive for exploration, Kawanti Adventures strives to make a positive impact, empowering the next generation of mechanics and engineers.

There are 3 types of bears in North America: Black Bears, Brown Bears, and Polar Bears. The most abundant of these are Black Bears, which have been recorded in all states except Hawaii, with an estimated 100,000 black bears in Alaska! The best time to see bears in Ketchikan is late July through September.

Size Doesn’t Matter

The black bear may be the smallest of the North American bears with adults about 29 inches at their shoulders and about 60 inches from nose to tail, but you still need to watch your Ps and Qs. Black bears are powerful, fast, and intelligent wild animals, weighing an average of 150-300 pounds and able to reach speeds of 30 miles per hour.

The majority of black bear want to avoid humans. So, what do you do if you unexpectedly encounter a black bear? Stay calm, speak loudly and clearly, make yourself look big by raising and waving your arms, and leave by backing away. Do not run. Do not climb a tree. You can’t run 30 miles per hour and the bear’s 1-2 inch claws are perfect for climbing a tree.

Your Average Bear in the Woods

Black isn’t always black. Black bears can have color variations ranging from brown, cinnamon, blond, white and blue-gray. They often have brown muzzles, and some have a patch of white hair on their chest.

They have an average sense of sight and hearing, but their sense of smell is off the charts! Other than humans, Black Bears have few predators except for other bears, usually brown. In the wild, the black bear life span is approximately 20 years.

Scat and the Circle of Life

Black bears are omnivorous, opportunistic eaters, enjoying plants, berries, insects, carrion, small mammals, fish… you get the idea!

Your best opportunity for seeing black bears is when they are feeding on salmon spawning or preparing to spawn in streams. This feeding location is quite efficient. It ensures the nutrients from the salmon are not washed back out to sea but are moved into the watershed. The subsequent nutrient rich bear scat enhances the growth of trees and vegetation along salmon spawning streams. This enhanced fertilized area has more insects (food) for young salmon.

And so, the circle is complete.

Most people come to Alaska with the hope of seeing a bear or an eagle but, if you go searching or just get lucky, you will find there are so many more animals to see.

Look up

High on the slopes is where you might spot a mountain goat. This alpine species has a fondness for rugged terrain and prefer to live climbing the cliffs and peaks of the mountains. You will often see mountain goats traversing above tree line or near glaciers where they can get rich nutrients from minerals deposited called salt licks. Mountain goats are easily distinguishable from Dall sheep by their black horns. What you might think is a light-colored rock when you are flying over the peaks may just be a group of mountain goats!

Look and Listen

A more common animal to jump out from hiding are the Sitka black-tailed deer. These friendly creatures roam along the roadways or can be found bounding into the brush around homes. During the summer their coat will turn a reddish-brown in exchange of their dark brown winter fur. Fawns are typically born in early June so keep a look out for the newly born deer hopping into the forest during your visit!

Look down

Yes, down! If you aren’t looking for them you might miss nature’s ultimate recycler: the Banana Slug. They eat nearly everything – living, dead and decaying plants, animal dropping, mushrooms, and more. As they vacuum the forest floor they speed decomposition, helping recycle nutrients and enriching the soil. Their slime is their secret sauce. It protects them from predators, helps them move through the forest, and prevents them from dehydration. If being the official mascot of University of California Santa Cruz wasn’t cool enough, these little cuties are also hermaphrodites!

Yeah, Bears and Eagles are also really cool, so cool that they each get their own article.
